Polyurea - The coating of the future

Polyurea has already been used for around 30 years. It was quickly realized that the material was ideal for spray coating.

Polyureas have already been used for around 30 years, with the USA leading the way. Originally, this material was developed for the automotive industry, and it was recognized fairly quickly that the material was ideally suited as a spray coating. As a particularly high-quality surface treatment that can be applied quickly, it has since been used in a wide variety of areas.

Application in a spray process has proven to be excellent, especially for coating or lining large areas, as a fast, efficient and durable sealant.

What can polyurea do?

The advantage of polyurea technology over other coatings is that it can be used even in humid conditions and low outdoor temperatures. It cures within a few minutes and is then particularly resistant to chemicals, high temperatures and mechanical stresses, as well as being 100% waterproof.

Due to its elasticity, the coating easily bridges cracks and adheres excellently to a wide variety of surfaces. Thanks to the special spraying process using a modern 2-component high-pressure spraying system, repairs and refurbishments can also be carried out in a very short time without having to accept long downtimes. Due to these unique properties, POLYUREA takes a prominent role among coating materials and makes it possible to offer solutions that have not existed in this form before. Polyurea is used particularly frequently, for example, in the areas of wear protection and water protection technology.

Advantages & Features

An appropriate polyurea coating or polyureacoating protects surfaces from chemical influences and mechanical abrasion; long-term corrosion protection can also be generated on steel surfaces. Since a polyurea coating also has high elasticities, fast processing times and excellent adhesion properties, it is clearly superior to conventional coatings. Whether concrete renovation or protection, whether corrosion and wear protection or whether coatings of the most different kind – with the 2K plants for polyurea respectively for the polyurea coating you can guarantee so for a basically effective and reliable application; also with the loading area coating, as a hail protection system with mobile homes or with the pond construction our plants prove themselves in view of the polyureacoating as always effective partner.

Technical Information Sheets:

The following is a technical information sheet from BASF. MasterSeal M689 is the polyurea we use most frequently.

Fields of application

Basically, polyurea is incredibly flexible and can be easily coated on almost any surface, provided it has been treated beforehand. This should at least be smooth (after all, a smooth surface is ultimately desired – except for slip classes). However, there are no limits in geometry. Round domes as well as flat roofs and stepped slopes are no problem for Polyurea.

Floors

Floors require the highest safety standards and a wide range of technical parameters must be met for the coating. In addition, the appearance plays a major role. Polyurea not only meets all requirements, but is also much more durable. No matter if parking garage, showroom or shopping center.

Roofs

Roofs of all types are exposed to a wide variety of weather conditions throughout the year. Especially in Central Europe, there are high weather and especially temperature differences due to the seasons. Polyurea is not only extremely temperature-resistant, but also UV-stable and absolutely waterproof. It is therefore suitable for the renovation and recoating of any roof.

Pools & Swimming Pools

The age of foil pools has come to an end. A specially developed and tested polyurea system with decoupling mats allows pools to be lined seamlessly. Completely seamless, hydrolysis resistant, leak proof and 100% protected against osmosis. Possible in any RAL tone.

Special solutions

Starting from the food industry to production halls and hospitals. Polyurea impresses with its high flexibility, chemical stability, easy cleaning and long service life.

There are hardly any limits to the possibilities and the areas of application are correspondingly diverse.

Structure & Technology

The structure of a polyurea coating is basically relatively simple. In order to be able to coat or apply, the substrate must first be pretreated. In the case of a concrete wall, it must be filled and netted. However, the basic rule is that it should be simply smooth.

A primer is then applied to the pre-treated substrate. This serves to create a bonding bridge between the polyurea and the substrate. This primer usually takes a few hours to cure before moving on to the next step.

Then comes the polyurea coating. This is applied by means of high-pressure spraying. In this process, both components of the liquid plastic are heated and applied at high pressure. In the nozzle, both components meet and the jet then hits this previously primed surface. After a few seconds the coating is completely cured!

Finally, a final sealant is added, which serves to protect against UV. In addition, these can be used to influence the desired appearance (in terms of color as well as gloss or mattness) and slip class.

Step #1

Pretreatment

The first thing to do is to grind down and remove the old system. Subsequently, the substrate is treated with a special primer.

Step #2

Primer

After the substrate has been prepared, it must be primed with a special primer to create optimum conditions.

Sealing

To also give the floor the right look and protect the surface, a final sealant in the form of a top coat is necessary.

Buy - Prices/Costs

Prices for a polyurea coating can vary. Of course, this also depends heavily on the substrate pretreatment and the measures required beforehand. Basically, the more m2 you want to have coated, the lower the price. Please feel free to contact us for a no-obligation quote.

Do coating yourself?

Manufacturing a polyurea coating yourself is not recommended under any circumstances. The system is so complex that a lot can go wrong during processing. In addition, you need the specialist equipment and the equipment to be able to achieve the desired results at all. Accordingly, it is better to leave coating to an expert and have it done professionally. Otherwise, you’ll probably pay a multiple price for any damage and remediation work anyway.
